L'Étrat, the town

L'Étrat covers 8.5 km², lies between 430 and 686 m above sea level and had 2,879 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

L'Étrat is a French commune situated in the département of Loire, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its inhabitants are known as Stratiens.

A little history

The town takes its name from the Latin Strata, indicating in all likelihood the presence of an ancient road. Originally a simple hamlet on the edge of the road linking Lyon to St-Rambert, the place depended during the Middle Ages on the neighbouring fief of La Tour-en-Jarez, until 1884 when significant rivalries led to an inevitable separation.
