Jurançon, the town
Jurançon covers 18.8 km², lies between 159 and 365 m above sea level and had 7,040 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Jurançon (in Béarnais Juranson or Yuransoû) is a French commune situated in the département of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The local residents are known as Jurançonnais.
A little history
The area was occupied very early, as proved by the Gallo-Roman remains from the 3rd century found at the pont d'Oly on both banks of the Néez. On the left bank there was a thermal station with a mosaic-floored room featuring figurative motifs including a Neptune surrounded by sea creatures. On the right bank there was a structure comprising a hemicycle gallery from which led rooms with underfloor heating and polychrome mosaic floors. The existence of the vine is thought to date from this period. It was from the 12th century that Jurançon became a vicomtal town under the protection of Gaston IV (in 1117), and later of Gaston Fébus.
