The history of Izernore is marked by the Gallo-Roman period. Archaeological excavations of the site have followed one another since 1784 with the discovery of Roman baths and more than a thousand imperial coins (since dispersed), then in the 19th century and in the years 1960–1970. The ancient site was one of the principal towns of the Bugey. The Gallo-Roman temple of Izernore stands as testimony to this.
