Igny (pronounced [iɲi]) is a French commune situated in the département de l'Essonne in the Île-de-France region. From the fortified farm of Amblainvilliers in the 13th century, through the estates dependent on Vilgénis, belonging to the families de Vigny and then de Bourbon-Condé, Igny has, after having been an important strawberry-producing site in the 19th century and having benefited from numerous successive housing developments in the 20th century, become a residential commune in the outer suburbs of Paris, combining areas of woodland, a town centre with an old rural charm, and recent detached housing estates.

A little history

No ancient trace or relic survives on the territory prior to the burial of the curé Jean from the 12th century, which nonetheless attests to the formation of a parish from that period. In 1180, a lord of Igny, Pierre de Munelles, was responsible for the guard of the château de Montlhéry for two months. The first certain mention of the place occurred in the 13th century in a cartulary of Philippe Auguste under the name Rivus de Ignaco. In the 13th century, the watchtower that today forms the bell tower of the église Saint-Pierre was built, alongside the construction of the fortified farm of Amblainvilliers.
