Gueugnon, the town
Gueugnon covers 28.5 km², lies between 233 and 352 m above sea level and had 6,528 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Gueugnon is a French commune, the chief town of a canton grouping twenty communes, situated in the département of Saône-et-Loire in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. In Gueugnon, in a meander of the Arroux, the marquis Jean Hector de Faÿ de La Tour-Maubourg, future maréchal de France (1757), established in 1724 the first forges and foundries in France. These installations, the celebrated Forges de Gueugnon, were to make Gueugnon, a town of 9,000 inhabitants at the time, the world leader in stainless steel in the 20th century.
A little history
Les Gravoches from the Bronze Age. In 2010, a preventive excavation at the lieu-dit les Gravoches revealed more than 650 hollow structures (post holes, ditches, pits, pits, silos), including the remains of a building dating from the transition between the Middle Bronze Age (1600–1350 BC) and the Late Bronze Age (Urnfield culture). It also uncovered a small necropolis of eight secondary cremation burials dating from Late Bronze Age IIb, including nine individuals of whom two were juveniles, and a settlement from the early Middle Ages.
