Grièges covers 14.9 km², lies between 169 and 212 m above sea level and had 1,910 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Grièges is a French commune situated in the département of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. A partly island commune in the south of the Bresse savoyarde between the Beaujolais, the Mâconnais and the Dombes, it has seen demographic growth over recent years like most communes in the urban area of Mâcon. With a population of 1,910 inhabitants in 2023, it is among the most populous communes in the canton of Vonnas.
A little history
In the Gallo-Roman period, settlement gradually encroached on the forest, which began to be cleared, and villae appeared as a result. The subsoil has yielded remains from this era, including pottery, tiles, jewellery and coins. The region was crossed by significant communication routes at that time. The Roman road running along the left bank of the Saône divides into two branches at the level of Bey. One heads towards Cormoranche and Grièges, crosses the two arms of the Veyle at Villeneuve and then continues to Feillens. The other, further to the east, reaches Lagnat, Pont-de-Veyle and continues towards Bâgé-le-Châtel along the old road parallel to the D28 route on the boundary of Saint-Jean-sur-Veyle.
