Gignac-la-Nerthe (in Provençal Ginhac de la Nerta according to the classical spelling, Gignac-de-la-Nerto according to the Mistralian spelling) is a French commune situated in the département of Bouches-du-Rhône, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, approximately 10 km from Marseille. It forms part of the urban unit of Marseille - Aix-en-Provence and of the métropole d'Aix-Marseille-Provence.
A little history
During Antiquity, the territory of the present-day commune was home to a Roman villa, la Poussaraque, with an oil press, storage areas, various buildings, private baths, a kiln, and a metalworking craft activity comprising a forge and a lime kiln. The establishment existed from the very end of the 1st century BC until the 6th century. In the 13th century, the Knights Templar built Saint-Michel de Gignac.
