Gif-sur-Yvette (pronounced [ ʒif syʁ ivɛt̪]) is a French commune in the département of Essonne in the Île-de-France region. It is the centralising office of the canton of the same name. It is situated twenty-four kilometres to the south-west of Paris.
A little history
Human presence has been attested on the plateau de Moulon since the Neolithic period, thanks to a preventive archaeological excavation during which the remains of a Celtic village, dating from the end of the 6th century BC to the beginning of the 5th century BC, were discovered on the communal territory in February 2006. It was a fairly large village composed of around fifteen buildings constructed in wood, on stilts, with walls made of wattle and daub.
