Gassin (pronunciation [ɡasɛ̃]) is a French commune situated in the gulf of Saint-Tropez, in the department of Var, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The commune is listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Populated since at least the Neolithic period, the territory lies within the area of Massaliote influence and later under Roman domination, with the Romans having left traces of several rustic villas.
A little history
Traces of human occupation (flint) date human habitation in the area back to the Neolithic period. The region was originally populated by Ligurian peoples, with whom Celts later mingled. The Greek historian and geographer Strabon refers to them as Celtolygians, noting that ancient authors called them Salyens. Pline l'Ancien, in his Histoire naturelle, mentions the Camulliques and the Sueltères as populations in this area.
