Fresnay-sur-Sarthe [fʁɛnɛ syʁ saʁt], known as Fresnay-le-Vicomte before the Revolution, is a French commune situated in the département of Sarthe, in the Pays de la Loire region. It was formed by the merger, on 1 January 2019, of the communes of Coulombiers, Fresnay-sur-Sarthe (commune déléguée) and Saint-Germain-sur-Sarthe under the status of commune nouvelle. It has a population of 2,928 inhabitants as of 2023.
A little history
The commune nouvelle was created on 1 January 2019 by a prefectoral order dated 30 November 2018. Its chief town was established at Fresnay-sur-Sarthe (commune déléguée). A rectification of the communal boundaries at the lieu-dit Valépée, the meeting point of the communes of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, Saint-Germain-sur-Sarthe, Saint-Aubin-de-Locquenay and Saint-Ouen-de-Mimbré, was necessary to ensure territorial continuity.
