A little history
In 1325 Fraisses was a possession of Gillet d'Escotay. The village of Fraisses became a commune at the Revolution in 1793, through the dismemberment of the parish of Firminy, but its inhabitants remained parishioners of Firminy until 1865, the date of the construction of a first church. On the coat of arms, an anvil and three ash trees (fraisse in Vivaro-Alpine Occitan) recall the rural past and the lost trade of the nail-makers. The commune became urbanised in a diffuse manner, as a residential annexe to the Holtzer steelworks, which built a garden city between the two wars based on an Alsatian workers' housing model.
