A little history
Fismes, on the right bank of the Vesle, is an ancient Gaulish settlement, known, during the Gallo-Roman period, as Ad Fines Suessionium (the border of the territory of the Suessions) or Ad Fines Remorum (the border of the territory of the Rèmes). During the Carolingian period, between Troyes in 878 and Mayence in 888, it was at Fismes in 881 that a council was held. This was the period when Fismes was destroyed on several occasions, by the Normans and then by the Hungarians, which led the settlement to move up to the heights of the left bank.
