Eymet (occitan, Aimet, [ɛjˈme]) is a French commune situated in the département of Dordogne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Chef-lieu of the canton d'Eymet from 1790 to 2015, the commune became at that date the bureau centralisateur of the canton du Sud-Bergeracois.
A little history
Numerous Gallo-Roman remains have been discovered in Eymet and its surroundings. The remains of a Gaulish rampart were notably unearthed in 2021 to the south of the bastide, on the plateau de Blis. From the Gaulish period, the geographical situation, on the edge of the Dropt, right on the boundary of the territory of the Pétrocores, gave this settlement a strategic importance. Alphonse de Poitiers, comte de Toulouse and brother of Saint Louis, had detected this quality when he decided to found a bastide in this location in 1270.
