Dourdan (pronounced [d̪uʁd̪ɑ̃]) is a French commune situated forty-four kilometres south-west of Paris in the département of l'Essonne in the Île-de-France region. It is the chef-lieu of the canton de Dourdan and the seat of the communauté de communes Le Dourdannais en Hurepoix. A Celtic village and then a Gallo-Roman settlement, birthplace of the Capetians and a royal town since the tenth century, capital of the Hurepoix and the foremost town of l'Essonne in the valley of l'Orge, Dourdan is still celebrated today for its exceptionally well-preserved thirteenth-century château and its vast forest.
A little history
Following the discovery of prehistoric tombs, it is possible to place the first human presence at Dourdan at around the sixth millennium before Christ. The recorded history of Dourdan almost certainly begins with the period of Celtic settlement, as the etymology of its name attests, Dour meaning water and referring to l'Orge. The site was at that time situated on the boundary between the territories of the Carnutes and Parisii peoples. From that period onwards, an oppidum was built at Dourdan, as the discovery of tools attests.
