Cruas covers 15.5 km², lies between 72 and 480 m above sea level and had 2,898 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Cruas is a French commune, situated in the département of Ardèche in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The commune, positioned in the vallée du Rhône, is home to the headquarters of the communauté de communes Ardèche Rhône Coiron, several cement works and the central nucléaire de Cruas-Meysse. Its inhabitants are known as the Cruassiens.
A little history
The Roman road known as the Voie des Helviens or Voie Romaine d'Antonin-le-Pieux, which links Barjac (to the north of the Gard) to Valence (in the Drôme) passing through Alba-la-Romaine (capital of the Helviens), crosses the territory of the commune. Six milestones have been found there to date. In the 8th century, an abbey was established at Cruas by Eribert, first comte de Vivarais. The charta vetus of the évêché de Viviers allows the date of its foundation to be estimated at around 750.
