Crolles, the town

Crolles covers 14.2 km², lies between 219 and 1,000 m above sea level and had 8,609 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Crolles is a French commune, geographically situated in the Grésivaudan valley, administratively located in the département of Isère in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and, formerly, attached to the ancient province of Dauphiné. This small town, whose territory is essentially urban, but where significant scattered rural areas remain, is today attached to the arrondissement of Grenoble and to the canton of Moyen Grésivaudan, of which it holds the centralising office. Crolles also hosts the headquarters of the communauté de communes du Pays du Grésivaudan, the principal communauté de communes in Isère, both in terms of its area and its number of inhabitants.

A little history

From the 4th millennium BC, the progressive cultivation of land on the slopes of the Grésivaudan and the Combe de Savoie by Neolithic farmers has been established through archaeological research. During the ancient period, in the valley of the Isère and therefore on the site of the present-day town of Crolles, the first historically known residents were the Allobroges, who settled there from the 5th century BC. This people occupied the largest zone stretching from the north of the Vercors and Belledonne through the Grésivaudan and across a large part of the region that would later be called the Sapaudia and which would become Savoie.
