Crémieu is a French commune situated in the département of Isère, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Historically attached to the province of Dauphiné, Crémieu has preserved its medieval town. The commune first joined the communauté de communes de l'Isle-Crémieu before becoming part of the communauté de communes les Balcons du Dauphiné, which resulted from the merger of several local authorities.
A little history
Crémieu lies at the heart of a region that was heavily occupied during prehistory. Two caves were discovered on the commune at Bethenaz, which contained Magdalenian flints (13000–10000 BC) along with the bones of reindeer, aurochs, horses and deer. A tomb at the chapelle de Notre Dame de la Salette contained a body with a very fine collection of bronze objects (a pin, bracelets, a rouelle and a clasp) dated to the early phase of the late Bronze Age (1250–1100 BC).
