The area is thought to have been inhabited as far back as the Neolithic period. In 1842, 1874 and 1886 a Celtic hypogeum was discovered, followed by a second one in 1887. According to legend, Crécy was founded in 930 BC by the duc d'Hibros, who came to Gaul at the head of 2,000 Sicambrians.
