Condat, the town
Condat covers 40.2 km², lies between 672 and 1,266 m above sea level and had 933 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Condat is a French commune situated in the département of Cantal, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The popular name is Condat-en-Féniers. Its inhabitants are called the Condatais.
A little history
The commune was partially dismembered in 1847 in favour of Chanterelle and in 1865 in favour of Montboudif. The contemporary history of Condat is linked to the itinerant trade in cloth, which developed from the middle of the 19th century and reached its peak during the interwar period. In search of additional sources of income to supplement agricultural activities, many Condatais undertook to practise the trade of toilier, that is to say itinerant cloth merchant. This activity was particularly well developed in Condat and in the area covering Riom-ès-Montagnes, Espinchal, Allanche and Egliseneuve d'Entraigues.
