Coligny, the town
Coligny covers 16.9 km², lies between 199 and 575 m above sea level and had 1,360 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Coligny is a French commune situated in the département of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It was a chef-lieu de canton of Ain before the reorganisation that took place at the time of the departmental elections of March 2015. Its inhabitants are called the Colignois and the Colignoises.
A little history
Coligny is known for its famous Celtic calendar, a unique piece in the world. The calendar, which dates from the end of the 2nd century, is the longest inscription in Gaulish to have come down to us. It has contributed greatly to the understanding of their language, their knowledge of astronomy, and their way of managing time. It is written in the Latin alphabet. Another interesting work discovered at Coligny in 1897, at the same time as the calendar, is a bronze statue, now called the Dieu de Coligny. Replicas of these two discoveries are on display at the mairie de Coligny.
