Cluny, the town
Cluny covers 23.7 km², lies between 226 and 574 m above sea level and had 4,942 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Cluny is a French commune situated in the département of Saône-et-Loire in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. In the Middle Ages, the town was one of the great centres of Europe's spiritual renewal, during the height of the abbaye and the ordre de Cluny. Drawing on its rich and lengthy historical past, which has left it a considerable number of monuments, the town has made tourism its driving force, and sits at the heart of the European network of Cluniac sites.
A little history
The abbaye de Cluny was founded in 909 or 910 by the Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Auvergne Guillaume Ier. Cluny is the symbol of monastic renewal in the Western world. The abbaye was a centre for the reform of the Benedictine rule and a leading intellectual centre during the High Middle Ages. Until the reconstruction, five centuries later, of Saint-Pierre de Rome, which would be 4 metres longer, the abbaye was the largest church in Christendom. Following the Revolution, the abbaye, having become a "bien national", was sold and demolished for the benefit of property dealers.
