Claye was inhabited under the first Frankish kings and under the Merovingians coins were struck at Claye. Merovingian coins have been found, one specimen of which adorned the numismatic collection of the vicomte d'Amécourt. No trace of Claye is found in manuscripts before the early twelfth century.
