Claix [klɛ] is a French commune in the suburbs of Grenoble, situated in the département of Isère and in the region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. According to INSEE, in 2017, the commune had 8,129 inhabitants known as Claixois. It forms part of the métropole Grenoble-Alpes Métropole, which groups together 49 communes and 440,000 inhabitants, in 2015.
A little history
Human presence in Claix and its surrounding area has been attested since Antiquity, with even prehistoric remains found on the commune. The most important prehistoric site is la Balme, a rock shelter that has been occupied for 3,000 years, at an altitude of 1,510 m beneath the Moucherotte. The rochers de Comboire are a presumed oppidum. At the lieu-dit "Trou du renard", the remains of a collective burial of 3,400 a.
