Chirens [ʃiʁɛ̃s] is a French commune situated in the département of Isère in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The commune is historically situated on the territory of the former province of Dauphiné, to the north of Voiron. It is home to two monuments listed as monuments historiques, the donjon du château de Clermont and the buildings of the former prieuré de Chirens.
A little history
At the beginning of Antiquity, the territory of the Allobroges extended over the greater part of the lands that would later be named Sapaudia (this "land of fir trees" would become Savoie) and to the north of the Isère. The Allobroges, like many other Gaulish peoples, were a confederation. In fact, the Romans gave, for convenience, the name Allobroges to all the Gaulish peoples living in the civitate (city) of Vienne, to the west and south of Sapaudia. Villa Nova Di Chiroyen is mentioned in 1330.
