Chauffailles is a French commune situated in the département of Saône-et-Loire, in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is the chief town of a canton, within the arrondissement of Charolles.
A little history
Several archaeological findings suggest the existence, from the early days of the Christian era, of a locality situated along the Roman road linking Augustodunum (Autun) and Lugdunum (Lyon). Well placed on the Charlieu-Beaujeu axis, it must have benefited from the expansion of trade along the Grand Chemin de Saint-Haon à Belleville, which was the principal route linking Saône and Loire until the early 15th century. It was at this time that Jean d'Amanzé, having become lord of the place by marriage, had the château de Chauffailles built there. A church was erected at the same time in place of the former chapel, but it was destroyed in the 19th century.
