Charavines, the town

Charavines is a French commune situated in the département of Isère in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and formerly attached to the province of Dauphiné. The commune, which is located more particularly in the natural region of the Terres froides, is one of the communes belonging to the communauté d'agglomération du Pays voironnais. The town, which, during a brief period, was known under the name of Charavines-les-Bains, owing to its bathing vocation, and which was formerly served by a tramway, borders the southern shores of the lac de Paladru, a natural lake in the French Prealps.
A little history
The Neolithic villages. A village of timber houses was established on the southern shore of the lac de Paladru (site of Colletière) around the 27th century BC, and farmers cleared the surrounding forest during the final Neolithic period. Analysis of the wood by dendrochronology has made it possible to trace its development, as it was enlarged and repaired several times over 20 to 22 years, after which the farmers left to build a new village in the surrounding area because the agricultural land was exhausted. They returned 40 years later and rebuilt the village on the same spot, where they remained for a further 20 years.
