Chancelade is a French commune situated in the département of Dordogne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It is known among history enthusiasts for the Homme de Chancelade and for its abbaye Notre-Dame. It is a stop on the via Lemovicensis on the pilgrimage of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.
A little history
Chancelade is known as a prehistoric site. It was in 1888 that an almost complete human skeleton was discovered. Analysed by the anatomist Léo Testut, it became the Homme de Chancelade, dating from 15,000 to 9,000 years BC. In the second half of the 18th century, the parish was identified on the carte de Cassini under the name of Beauronne de Chancelade.
