Chalamont is a French commune located in the département of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Since 2014, it has belonged to the canton of Ceyzériat, which is itself part of the arrondissement of Bourg-en-Bresse. According to Insee, it forms part of the urban area of Lyon.
A little history
Its name is probably derived from the patronym Salomon, just as the name of the Port de Chalamont, which became the quai Saint-Antoine in Lyon, once was. A small town, which is certainly one of the oldest in the Dombes, given that it lent its name to an archpriesthood and that the creation of archpriesthoods dates back to the council of Pavie in the year 850, it does not appear in documents until the 11th century. At that time, it was held in franc-alleu by a powerful family bearing the name and arms of Chalamont, who had a fortified castle built there near a poype (château de Chalamont), traces of which can still be seen. In 1212, the lordship was acquired by Guichard IV de Beaujeu for 1,000 sous forts from Alard de Chalamont.
