A little history
The market town of this commune was mentioned in 840 in a charter of Lothaire Ier. The first mention of Chagny dates from the reign of Charles le Chauve in 840-877. In 1220, a priory of the order of Saint-Ruf was founded on this territory. In 1369, Bertrand Du Guesclin, connétable in 1370, came to Chagny to persuade the leaders of the Grandes compagnies, based at the château de Chagny, to leave for Castile where they would take part in the war between the two rivals for the throne, Pierre le Cruel and Henri de Transtamare.
