Cazères, sometimes known locally as Cazères-sur-Garonne and in Occitan as Casèras, is a French commune situated in the centre of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the pays de Comminges, corresponding to the ancient comté de Comminges, a division of the province of Gascogne spanning the current départements of Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and Ariège. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Garonne, the Aygossau, the Bernès, the Garagnon, the ruisseau du Petit Bon and various other small watercourses.
A little history
Cazères stood at the boundary of several territories, Comminges, Volvestre, Gascogne, Couserans, Petites Pyrénées and Languedoc. It was an ancient bastide built in 1282 by Eustache de Beaumarchais on behalf of the king. It arose from the union of two towns, the closed and the open, as recalled by their names, Billebarrade (bilo barrado) and Villeinclosade (bilo enclosado). Saint Cizy fought the Saracens as did saint Vidian at Martres-Tolosane.
