Castelnau-d'Estrétefonds is a French commune situated in the south-west of France, in the north of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Frontonnais, a pays between the Garonne and the Tarn made up of a succession of stony terraces that have given rise to rich terroirs, renowned for their wines and fruits. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the canal latéral à la Garonne, the Girou, the Hers-Mort, the ruisseau de Rival and various other small watercourses.

A little history

Castelnau-d'Estrétefonds has existed under this name since the 10th century, though the place was inhabited as far back as prehistory. Indeed, recent archaeological excavations have led to the discovery of stones worked with rare perfection. The earliest remains date from the Roman era, when the road Tolosa (Toulouse) – Aeginum (Agen) passed close to Castelnau. Castelnau entered history from the 10th century onwards with the pilgrimages to Saint-Jacques de Compostelle.
