Bures-sur-Yvette (pronounced [byʁ sʏʁ ivɛt̪]) is a French commune situated twenty-three kilometres south-west of Paris in the département of l'Essonne in the Île-de-France region. Bures and its dependencies were the domain of illustrious figures, from the crusader Guillaume Ier de Bures to the favourite of François Ier, Anne de Pisseleu. Situated on the route de Chartres, the village was modernised with the arrival in the 19th century of the ligne de Sceaux and then the ligne Paris-Chartres par Gallardon in the 20th century.
A little history
The history of the commune of Bures-sur-Yvette has come down to us principally through Jules Lair, a barrister at the Paris court of appeal and member of the Institut de France, who published in 1876 the Histoire de la Seigneurie de Bures. His research was taken up and continued in 1994 in a collective work, Bures-sur-Yvette, La mémoire d'une ville. The first mention of the name Bures is thought to date back to the 12th century. The crusader Guillaume Ier de Bures and his brother Godefroy, originally from the territory forming the present-day town, took part in 1119 in a raid into Muslim lands.
