Brignoles (Brignolo ou Brinhòla [bʁiˈɲɔ.lɔ] in Provençal) is a French commune in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Capital of the Provence Verte, it is situated in the département of Var, of which it is the second sous-préfecture along with Draguignan. Its inhabitants are known as the Brignolais.
A little history
The construction of the dolmens des Adrets and that of l'Amarron attests to human occupation of the commune's territory as far back as the Neolithic period. The plain of Brignoles was at that time nothing more than a vast marshland on the edge of the Caramy, whose unconfined riverbed frequently shifted course. The territory of Brignoles was occupied by the Suelteri, who established numerous oppida on the hilltops. The Romans drained the land and built numerous villæ along the via Aurelia.
