Bordères-sur-l'Échez [bɔʁdɛʁ syʁ leʃɛs] is a French commune situated in the north of the département des Hautes-Pyrénées, in the région Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the former comté de Bigorre, a historic county of the French Pyrénées and Gascony. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Échez, the Souy, the Géline, the Mardaing and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The village was originally established on an ancient Gallo-Roman villa situated near the château d'Urac with, below it, the river Échez. Around the year 800, the local community voluntarily undertook to expand its heritage by clearing woodland and moorland, and by building a chapel. From the 15th century onwards, the initial mystical enthusiasm gradually faded. A period of withdrawal began to emerge.
