A little history
According to Maumené (1908, op.cit.), a notarial deed dated 10 August 1507 indicates that the forest of Clossay, the principal "nucleus" of the land of Bonnétable, extended as far as Terrehault by way of Rouperoux. The estate was built up over the centuries through the amalgamation of lands, such as in 1489 that of Convoise and its dependencies, united in 1562 with the fief of Genay. In 1908, the château estate comprised 3,500 hectares, of which 1,100 hectares of forest were crossed by 80 kilometres of roads, and no fewer than 80 farms. In the Dictionnaire géographique universel published in 1825 by the société de géographes, Bonnétable is cited as a town producing siamoises, calicots and cotton handkerchiefs.
