Bidart (pronounced [bidaʁ], in Basque, Bidarte) is a French commune situated in the département des Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Bordering Biarritz, it lies twenty-five kilometres north of the Franco-Spanish border.
A little history
The passage of human groups 30,000 years ago is attested by the discovery in the Chabiague-Ilbarritz area of flint flakes, burins and other scrapers. The greater part of these materials is dated to the Châtelperronien (Upper Palaeolithic). According to Emmanuel Passemard, this was "a supply station where the knapping of blades was carried out, probably rather rough ones, on fragments rolled by the sea", where men settled to conduct trade. Research has not yet revealed any remains between this Upper Palaeolithic period and the Neolithic, a period for which tool and pottery remains dating from 3,200 years BC
