A little history
This small town was, in the Middle Ages, a highly important stronghold. Situated between Maine and Normandy, it naturally had to endure a great deal from the bloody struggles incessantly waged between the counts and dukes of those two provinces. From the 10th to the 11th century, the first lords of Beaumont frequently bore the name Raoul, viscounts of Le Mans. They fought in particular against Guillaume le Bâtard who, over a period of fourteen years, from 1070 to 1084, captured the town on as many as five occasions. Finally, the viscount Hubert, son of Raoul V, was fortunate enough to compel the formidable conqueror of England to come to an agreement.
