Aureilhan is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Hautes-Pyrénées, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune belongs to the former comté de Bigorre, a historic county of the French Pyrénées and Gascony. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Adour, the canal d'Alaric, the Ousse, the Canal de l'Ailhet and by two other watercourses.
A little history
The Oustau d'Aureilhan ceramic factory was founded in 1873 by Laurence Oustau. It occupies a plot of approximately 2.5 ha situated between the route de Bours and the railway line, to the south-west of Aureilhan. In addition to tiles and bricks, its main activity, this factory also manufactured ceramic stoneware floor and paving tiles, tomettes, refractory products, fire pottery, glazed stoneware pipes, enamelled earthenware articles, floor tiles and marble mosaic articles. Its output was recognised with a gold medal at the Exposition universelle of 1889.
