Aups covers 64.2 km², lies between 385 and 1,076 m above sea level and had 2,192 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Aups (pronounced [ops], in Provençal z-Aup (Mistralian spelling) / z-Aups (classical spelling), pronounced [ˈzaw]) is a French commune situated in the département of Var, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. In 2009, it described itself as the "capitale du Haut-Var" and the "capitale de la truffe".
A little history
The village was formerly called oppidum d'Alpibus then castrum d'Alpibus, castrum d'Almis, then Alps and finally Aups. It was occupied by the Oxybiens during the Roman era, on the site of the plateau de Saint-Marc (on the via Aurelia running from Fréjus (Forum Julii) to Riez (Forum Reii)). Jules César passed through it to conquer Gaul and is said to have declared that he would rather be first at Aups than second in Rome. All around the village, traces of this Roman presence have been found, such as an ancient hospital and milestone markers, notably around the plan de Canjuers, whose name comes from Campus Julii, or the camp of Jules César.
