Aspet, the town
Aspet covers 26.4 km², lies between 399 and 1,240 m above sea level and had 907 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Aspet (Aspèth in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the south-west of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the pays de Comminges, corresponding to the former comté de Comminges, a division of the province of Gascogne situated across the current départements of Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and Ariège. Exposed to a mountain climate, it is drained by the Rucan, the ruisseau du Soueil and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The precise moment at which the seigneurie d'Aspet was formed is unknown. The first seigneur whose name has been preserved was called Ramon-At(hon). He lived around 1068. Several seigneurs d'Aspet took part in the Crusades, in particular Arnaud II, who set sail with Philippe-Auguste from Gênes in 1190.
