A little history
The earliest traces of civilisation date from prehistory, more precisely from the Magdalenian period. Excavations in four caves situated on the territory of the commune (Malarode, Poeymaü, Saint-Michel and Espalungue) have yielded bones, tools and numerous snail shells. The village of Eruri, or Aruri, is mentioned from the 13th century onwards. It is from this period that the syndicat d'Ossau was created, which allowed a relative independence for the communes of the valley up until the Revolution.
