A little history
The town developed around the couvent des Augustins. Arthez de Béarn was a stronghold in the Middle Ages (the traces of the ramparts can still be seen, overlooked by the place de l'église). The village was part of the network of fortifications of Béarn (see Gaston Fébus). The Wars of Religion caused the churches of Notre-Dame and de la Trinité to disappear, and the Protestant temple itself is now but a memory.
