Allevard is a French commune situated in the département of Isère in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, formerly attached to the ancient province of Dauphiné. The commune is also known by the name of Allevard-les-Bains, owing to the presence of a thermal spa. This small town, whose territory is largely urban in nature but which also includes very significant scattered rural areas, is today attached to the arrondissement of Grenoble and to the canton of Haut-Grésivaudan.
A little history
Men settled in the valley of Allevard, Bramefarine and the valleys stretching back towards the Belledonne range very early on. As far back as the 4th millennium BC, during the Neolithic period, there was settlement of the Grésivaudan, including Allevard, thanks to increasingly widespread agriculture on the hillsides, notably through slash-and-burn cultivation. Archaeological traces indicate that the vast primary forests that covered the region were already being cleared with polished axes, whose blades came from the neighbouring Val d'Aoste.
