Wassy [vasi] is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Marne, in the Grand Est region. It is known principally for being the site of the massacre de Wassy, in 1562, which marked the beginning of the Wars of Religion in France.
A little history
Wassy is mentioned for the first time in a charter from the 7th century concerning the founding of the abbaye de Montier-en-Der and was originally a Roman villa, included in the pagus Pertensis. Like the rest of this region, it was most likely ravaged during the barbarian invasions. According to oral tradition, Wassy became an important town during the Roman occupation. It is said to have been burned and pillaged by the Roman legions of the emperor Caracalla.
