Joinville (pronounced [ ʒwɛ̃.ˈvil]), also known as Joinville-en-Vallage or indeed Joinville en Champagne, is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Marne, in the Grand Est region. The commune has held the label Village étape since 2014 and Petite cité de caractère since 2015. Its inhabitants are known as the Joinvillois.
A little history
The founding of Joinville dates back, according to local historiographical tradition, to the Gallo-Roman general Jovin who, in 354, is said to have erected a wooden fort and ramparts there to contain the Alamans. The fief of Joinville has been attested in existence since the 9th century. The château de Joinville was built in 1027 by Étienne de Vaux, first baron de Joinville. Among the direct descendants of Étienne de Vaux, Geoffroy III founded in 1163 the collegiate church of Saint-Laurent where Jean de Joinville would be the first sire de Joinville to be interred.
