Chaumont is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Marne (of which it is the prefecture), in the Grand Est region. The commune was called Chaumont-en-Bassigny until 1971. The Centre national du graphisme is located there.
A little history
The town grew from a feudal foundation in a populated countryside. The site is a former Carolingian residence of the counts of the pays de Champagne, watched over by a castle erected during the Ottonian period. The power of the counts of Champagne radiating across the entire region allowed the choice of their domain or villa, which they transformed into their favoured town. Chaumont thus benefited very early on from a strategic political position, but was also subject to the vicissitudes of the ruling dynasties of Champagne.
