A little history
Although the first mention of the name of the commune does not appear until towards the end of the 9th century, its occupation is very ancient (traces of occupation dating back to the Neolithic). The town gradually took the place of the Gallo-Roman stronghold of Olonna, where, according to legend, survivors of the destruction of Andemantunnum are said to have brought back the remains of their bishop, Dizier, and made a sanctuary of it. At the archaeological site of les Crassées, occupied during the Gallo-Roman period (1st to 5th centuries) and the early medieval period (6th to 12th centuries), the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa belonging to wealthy aristocrats were discovered.
