Volx [vɔlks] is a French commune situated in the département des Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in the région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The commune offers several characteristics typical of communes in the Mediterranean hinterland, with rugged hilly terrain, a climate that is hot and dry in summer and cool in winter. Nature can show its destructive side there, with fires, catastrophic floods and earthquakes. Technological risks have been added over the past few decades.
A little history
In Antiquity, the territory of Volx formed part of that of the Sogiontiques (Sogiontii), whose territory extended from the south of the Baronnies to the Durance. The Sogiontiques were federated to the Voconces, and after the Roman conquest they were attached with them to the Roman province of Narbonnaise. In the 2nd century, they were detached from the Voconces and formed a distinct civitas, with Segustero (Sisteron) as its capital. An inscription mentioning the Celtic bear-goddess Andarta was found there on an altar, attesting to a cult dedicated to this goddess of the Voconces people.
