A little history
Outside of legends, little is known about the town before the Roman era. Under the Roman Empire, the town was a regional market. Among the archaeological discoveries, the site of les Passaïres (a potter's workshop producing wine amphorae) establishes that the area of Manosque was, owing to its proximity to the Via Domitia, strongly integrated into the Roman Empire and deeply permeated by its ways of life. While the south-east of Gaul was Burgundian territory, the Ostrogoth king Théodoric le Grand conquered the region between the Durance, the Rhône and the Isère in 510.
