Its inhabitants are called the Barcelonnets, the Barcelonnettes, or the Barcelonnettais. Barcelonnette is a mountain commune, situated entirely at an altitude of over 1,100 m.
A little history
The region was populated by Ligurians from the 1st millennium BC. According to Polybe, they were "roughly wild, feeding on the milk of their ewes and the product of their hunting, without laws, without industry, living in shapeless huts covered with thatch and reeds, scattered here and there". Several centuries later, the arrival of the Celts in the region gave rise to a Celto-Ligurian people described by Polybe as "very numerous", warlike but nonetheless civilised and trading, whose bravery was praised by César. These were the Ésubiens.
